To get there, experts recommend limiting your carbs and restricting fat, which will help you shed pounds.

Stick with a high carbohydrate, low fat dietWhile dieters can do this with a few tweaks, it’s important to make sure you’re following a strict diet and eating your carbs slowly and eating fat slowly.
This will allow your body to adapt to the change.
“You don’t want to overdo it on carbs, because you want to maintain that high-fat, high-carb diet,” said Dr. Sarah Wojcicki, chief of the Division of Diabetes and Endocrinology at the Mayo Clinic.
Wojcicky recommends sticking to a high carb, low sugar diet, with fewer carbs than most people.
You’ll want to stick to that, she said, because the low sugar will help to build up your fat reserves and allow you to maintain a higher fat intake, which is the best way to lose body fat.
“It’s not going to be as drastic as you’d think, because a ketogenic [low-carb] diet has been shown to work for weight management,” she said.
So, don’t worry if you’re on a low carb, high sugar diet.
But keep in mind that you can go on a keto diet as long as you stick to the low carb diet.
“The reason ketogenic diets work for people with Type 1 diabetes is because the ketogenic fat is ketone bodies,” said Wojcik.
These are the same fat molecules that give people energy.
“So, in fact, ketones are the reason why Type 1 people can lose fat,” she added.
Wodcicky suggested that people with diabetes who lose fat on a high ketogenic carb diet might have a better chance of keeping their weight loss goal.
“When you’re fat, you need to maintain your body fat,” said she.
“And when you’re lean, you want fat.”3.
Switch your eating habits to a ketosis dietInstead of consuming carbs and fats like most people, eat a ketotic diet, which requires that you limit the amount of carbohydrates you eat and eat fats at a lower rate.
Wolczynski recommends that people who are already diabetic or have type 1 diabetic should switch to a higher-fat ketosis, which reduces the amount and the amount you eat of carbs and fat, while also keeping your blood sugar at a healthy level.
“If you can get into ketosis or a low fat ketosis and you’re not eating too much carbs, it is not as restrictive as it may sound, and you can do that,” she explained.
“And if you can, switch to that and you’ll be very successful.

Stick to a lower carb, higher fat dietAs with any diet, there are times when switching to a different type of diet is beneficial, Wojcsik said.
If you want a healthier and more balanced diet, stick with a low carbs, high fats diet.
And if you need help with your weight loss, Dr. Wojczynski suggests starting with a ketonic diet.
But be aware that switching to ketosis will not be as effective as a high fat, low carb ketosis.
“A ketogenic low carb or high fat [low carb] diet will not do you as well as a ketone-based low carb and high fat,” Wojnic said.
“A ketone diet will.
That is, a ketonotic low carb.
It will not work as well.
So you’re just looking at a very low carb low fat.”
