Mayo Clinic Medical Center doctors say they were “deeply disappointed” when they learned they were being asked to write the script for a comedy series about Mayo Clinic physicians, as well as for an upcoming film about them.
The show, written and directed by David W. Wolk, will be based on the book, Mayo Doctors, by Michael H. Cusick.
Wollk has previously made a film about the doctors, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014.
The film, titled The Doctors, has received mixed reviews.
It was shot in a hospital setting and had a heavy emphasis on the medical professionals, but the film’s director, Jeff Cronenweth, said that the filmmakers were not pressured to make the characters look good.
Wolk said in a statement that he is “deepfully disappointed” with the series.
“While the production team and I were deeply disappointed to learn that we were being offered the role of the lead characters, we were also excited to bring our unique comedic style to the world of The Doctors and see how it would be received,” he wrote.
“We had high hopes that the show would take the role seriously and we’re very proud to have proven it.”
Actors and producers of The Humans, which will premiere in May, said they were also disappointed to hear about the show.
“We were excited to be part of a story that celebrates the human spirit and the incredible doctors who provide us with everything we need and more,” said the producers, which include David Fincher, Chris Tucker and Jon Bernthal.
The Humans, about a group of highly trained surgeons who spend their days treating patients and their evenings with patients, will begin filming in May.
